Contact lines on stretched soft solids: modelling anisotropic surface stresses

چکیده

We present fully analytical solutions for the deformation of a stretched soft substrate due to static wetting large liquid droplet, and compare our recently published experiments (Xu et al, Soft Matter 2018). Following Green's function approach, we extend surface-stress regularized Flamant-Cerruti problem account uniaxial pre-strains substrate. Surface profiles, including heights opening angles ridges, are provided linearized finite kinematics. fit experimental ridge shapes as applied strain using two free parameters, surface Lame coefficients. In comparison with experiments, find that observed more accurately captured kinematics, especially increasing levels pre-strain. These fits qualitatively agree results Xu but revise values elastic constants.

Surface sulci in squeezed soft solids.

The squeezing of soft solids, the constrained growth of biological tissues, and the swelling of soft elastic solids such as gels can generate large compressive stresses at their surfaces. This causes the otherwise smooth surface of such a solid to become unstable when its stress exceeds a critical value. Previous analyses of the surface instability have assumed two-dimensional plane-strain cond...

Stresses in Anisotropic Cylinders

Axisymmetrical stresses in an infinitely long hollow isotropic circular cylinder (plane strain) quickly approach their asymptotic values as the external radius increases. This is not the case if the cylinder is even slightly anisotropic -asymptotic solutions (for an infinitely large external radius) do not exist. We find the mechanical meaning of this disparity by using formulas for radial and ...

Contact instabilities of anisotropic and inhomogeneous soft elastic films.

Anisotropy plays important roles in various biological phenomena such as adhesion of geckos and grasshoppers enabled by the attachment pods having hierarchical structures like thin longitudinal setae connected with threads mimicked by anisotropic films. We study the contact instability of a transversely isotropic thin elastic film when it comes in contact proximity of another surface. In the pr...

Contact lines for fluid surface adhesion.

When a fluid surface adheres to a substrate, the location of the contact line adjusts in order to minimize the overall energy. This implies boundary conditions which depend on the characteristic surface deformation energies. We develop a general geometrical framework within which these conditions can be derived in a completely systematic way. We treat both adhesion to a rigid substrate and adhe...
